Dealing With A Distressing Spirit 1 Samuel 16: 13 - 16

Many Christians are at one time or another are afflicted with a distressing spirit similiar to Saul.  What is the meaning of these experiences and how do you handle these phononmen or dealings of the Lord?  First let me say, I believe it can be God's way of dealing with his wayward children.  Let's see what scripture says about it.

1 Samuel 16: 13 - 16, NKJV reads, (13) "Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.  So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.  (14)  "But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him, (15) And Saul's servants said to him, "Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you.  (16 "Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp.  And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well."

Saul's servants, not knowing God, had only wordly advice to heal him.  Instead Saul should have sought God for healing, but he sought after worldy comforts.  This is walking away from the fountains of living water and still expecting God to help in time of need - it won't work.  When God was troubling his spirit with a feeling that God had left him he sought worldly comforts to make him feel better instead of asking God for understanding and a revelation of where he had offended God so he could repent.  However, I believe you know what God is dealing with you about, but in His displeasure He doesn't allow you to hear His voice or feel his presence till you have humbled yourself to make straight paths for your feet.  See Luke 3: 8.

Nebuchadnezzaar had the same experience in Daniel 2: 1, NKJV "Now in the second year of Nebuchadnezzar reign, Nebuchadnezzarhad had dreams; and his spirit was so troubled that his sleep left him."

When a troubling spirit afflicts a born again Christian, I believe God is wanting to or has revealed an error to them, whatever the sin is.  Another way to put it is laid out in Romans 1: 21 and 28, (21) "because although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God; nor were thankful (they knew God and became overconfident and presumptutious) but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened (Emphasis Mine). (28) And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind to do those things which are not fitting."  This is what happened to Saul.  God wouldn't speak to him anymore.

How do we handle it?  Let's begin by looking at a largely misunderstood scripture Hebrews 6: 4 - 12, for now 4 - 6,  For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift and have become partakers of the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, if they fall away, to renew them again to repentance, since they crucify again for themselves the Son of God, and put Him to an open shame."  This happened with Saul when he consulted the medium at En Dor," see 1 Samuel 28: 4 - 25.  You have to walk away from seeking God and take sides willfully with Satan for help to fulfill this scripture, it is close to blaspheming the Holy Ghost.  When God is silent, keep seeking Him, He will answer Matthew 7: 7 - 11,

Now 7 - 10, (7) "For the earth which drinks in the rain that often comes upon it, and bears herbs useful for those by whom it is cultivated, receives blessing from God., (8) but if it bears thorns and beirs, it is rejected and its end is near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned.  (9) But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner.  (10) For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love. This is the same exhortation as in Romans 2: 4 had in mind, "Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repent.  My point is that if you are distressed in spirit about your salvation, then you haven't lost your salvation, God is striving with your spirit and He will reveal Himself and His healing spiritually if you continue to pray through this experience till He answers.  Peter put it this way, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance, and 1 Peter 3:9, and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation as also our beloved brother Paul according to the wisdom given him, has written to you. 1 Peter 3: 15.

Then the writer of Hebrews continues in verses 11 - 12, "And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises".  What did David do when he was smitten with a troubled spirit.  1 Samuel 24: 10 says, "And David's heart condemned him after he had numbered the people.  So David said to the Lord, I have sinned greatly in what I have done; but now, I pray O Lord, take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have done very foolishly."

David sought God's mercy, not hiding his sin from man or God, which can't be done before God anyway, and there were consequences.  David did not rebell against God when he destroyed seventy thousand of the people, see verse 15.  See Psalm 32.

Listen to Hebrews 12: 5 - 12,  (5) "And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons, "My son, so not despise the chastening (dealings) of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked (troubled) by Him; (6) For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son He receives."  (7)  If you endure chastening God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? . . . (12) Therefore strengthen the hands that hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed." (Emphasis Mine)

As it also says in Job 34: 31 - 37, (31) "For has anyone said to God, I have borne chastening: I will offend no more: (32) Teach me what I do not see; If I have done iniquity, I will do no more"?  (33) Should He repay it according to your terms, Just because you disavow it?  You must choose, and not I.  Therefore speak what you know.  (Choose what?  Choose to humble yourself under the mighty hand of God (His dealings) or not).  (34) Men of understanding say to me, Wise men who listen to me: (35) Job speaks without knowledge, His words are without wisdom.'  (36) Oh, that Job were tried to the utmost, Because his answers are like those of wicked men!  (37) For he adds rebellion to his sin; He claps his hands among us, And multiplies his words against God.  And Job further states in 35: 14, Although you say you do not see Him.  Yet justice is before Him and you must wait for Him.  and 36: 4 - 5 "For truly my words are not false; One who is perfect in knowledge is with you.  (5)Behold, God is mighty, but despises no one; He is mighty in strength of understanding. (Emphasis Mine).

Therefore the Savior I believe is at the right hand of the Father praying for those that are being troubled in spirit due to God's dealing with them to get serious, as He did for Peter in Luke 22: 32, "But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and that when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethern."  Peter's faith about to faulter because of guilt, but when he truly repented, Jesus revealed himself to Peter with loving restoration or spiritual healing.  Peter's faith never faultered and he never trusted in himself knowingly again.

Psalm 27: 13 - 14 gives us this exhortation from David, "I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.  (14) Wait on the Lord, (In humility, prayer, and fasting).  Be of good courage, And He will strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord. (Emphasis Mine).

Now in closing, I pray for you that are going through this as Paul prayed for the Thessalonians in 1Thessalonians 1: 11 - 12, " Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thought for the Day

A business man was once suppose to have said, "If I don't learn to be patient with people, I will miss all my opportunities to be a good influence for Christ."

Another thought for today is in Luke 17: 10, "So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants, We have done what was our duty to do."

Jesus was talking about using mustard seed faith in this section of scripture, from verse 5 through 10.  What is faith for?  We are taught today, in some circles, that it is to receive whatever we ask for in the way of materials things we want.

James 4: 3-5 says, "You ask and do not receive because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures."  He goes on further down in these verses to say using faith this way is spiritual adultery, so how do we use it?

In Romans 12: , Paul says and affirms Luke 17: 10, "I beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service."

Sounds like faith is to be used to serve God's purposes not ours, manifesting God in our character as affirmed in James 2: 20-26, "But do you not know O foolish man the faith without works is dead? . . . For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

Verse 24 could be paraphrased this way, "You see then that a man's faith is proven by works of character and not faith only."  The faith that only asks for things for ourselves is unproductive faith.

Being patient and kind is a work of faith expressing our confidence in God who has a purpose and is working all things for the good of those who love him and are called according to his purposes.  See Romans 8: 28.  Slow down and be anxious for nothing, and all these things will be added to us in God's good time.  Let us humble ourselves under the mighty providence of God and he will exalt us to greener pastures in his time..

Christian Sufferings

When we suffer I think the first thing that comes to a persons mind is bewilderment.  Christians begin to ask the question "Why."  It seems strange that this could be happening to me or why is this happening to me?

I like the scripture comfort that comes from 1 Peter 4: 12 - 13:

"Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trail which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy."

To the extent that you suffer is different each time.  Sometimes you suffer in denying the flesh, and at other times you suffer persecution for doing what's right, or just going through things you don't understand why period.  Paul said in Acts 20: 24:

"None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to me, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God."

Paul looked at suffering as having a purpose in his statement in 1 Corinthians 15: 58:

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord."   See Acts 20: 24 again (None of these things move me),

Peter says it does have a purpose - to glorify God in 1 Peter 4: 15 - 16:

"But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evil doer, or a busy body in other people's matters.  Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter."

Paul explains the why of Christian suffering in 2 Corinthians 4: 11 - 12:

"For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.  So then death is working in us but life in you."

As you endure suffering giving praise to God, God is working in you and in the lives of those who observe the grace in which you endure.  Now look at what Peter says about it again in 1 Peter 4: 19:

"Therefore, let those who suffer according to the will of God, commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful creator."

And he says what  the end of suffering is in 1 Peter 5: 9 - 10:

"Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings, are experienced by your brotherhood in the world.  But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Jesus Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you."

James explains the end of our sufferings like this in James 5: 10 - 11:

"My brethren, take the prophets, who spoke in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and patience.  Indeed we count them blessed who endure.  My have heard of the perseverance of job and seen the end intended by the Lord- the Lord is very compassionate and merciful."

To come to that place of perfection, establishment, strengthening, and stableness one has to endure knowing that our labor is not in vain in the Lord, see 1 Corinthians 15: 58.

So allow yourself to be moved by your trials but let patience prevail working in you completeness and wholeness, see James 1: 2 - 4.

If God breathed truth into your spirit I'd appreciate it if you'd like and comment.

Wisdom From God

Every Christian would like to receive wisdom from God and few understand what God says about receiving it. God is pretty straight forward about how a person can receive wisdom from him.

First he says in James 1: 5 - 8 NKJV, "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.  But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man unstable in all his ways."

The request for wisdom is pleasing to God.  Remember Solomon who asked God for wisdom and God blessed him with fame, riches and honor because his request was not for something selfish, it served as an example for us.  However, we read this scripture in the book of James and think all we have to do is ask, but there is a little more to it than that.

The last verse of that portion of scripture puts a value on steadfastness in the faith to receiving wisdom or a revelation of God's godly advice.  We may ask does any other scripture make that assertion?  Yes, there is.  Proverbs 1: 23, NKJV, asserts:

"Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you." and again in John 14: 22 - 23 Judas (not Is-car'i-ot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"  Jesus said, "Jesus answered and said to him, 'If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him."

So we see that everyone that asks for wisdom does not receive it without having a steadfast heart toward him.  This is also backed up with scripture in Romans 1: 21 - 28:

"because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened . . . And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are fitting."  Jesus also proclaimed that God hardened and blinded the minds some in the parable of the word when answering the question the disciples asked him in Matthew 13: 10 - 16 NKJV:

"And the disciples came and said to Him, "Why do You speak to them in parables?"  He answered and said to them, "Because it has been given to you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given.  "For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.  Therefore I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand.  And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says:  'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive:  For the hearts of this people have grown dull.  Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes they have closed,  Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them.  "But blessed are your eyes for they see, and your ears for they see, and your ears for they hear."

So we see blindness and denial of the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him comes from being dull hearted and not being zealous for the things of God.  Jesus exhorts us in Mark 4: 24:

"Then He said to them, "Take heed what you hear, "With the same measure you use, it will be measured to you, and to you who hear, more will be given."

What causes us not to measure up?  Read the parable of the sower, Matthew 13: 18 -23 and it will be plain to you.

If God breathed truth into your spirit I'd appreciate it if you'd like and comment.

Your Sufficiency is of God

Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant - not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life." 2 Corinthians 3: 4 - 6, NIV
God has made us all sufficient ministers of reconciliation through the fellowship of the Spirit. If there is no fellowship of the Spirit then there is no sufficiency. Christians haven't realized, to some part, that they have a significant role in reconciling man to God. You don't know something till you realize it with the understanding. That role is being lights to the world and bold in proclaiming the truth about our faith that is found in the face of Jesus Christ. Let me explain using some scripture:
In Acts 1: 8 Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth." When we think of power as Christians, we think of the gifts of the Spirit doing the awesome and the miraculous. However, Jesus is mainly talking of the character change and the boldness to speak up about our faith. He was talking about the power to be lights to this world. As a matter of fact, he commands us to be lights, "In the same way let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds (changed behavior)and praise (acknowledge God in you) your Father in heaven." Matthew 5: 16, NIV, (Emphasis Mine), See also 1 Peter 3: 13 -17.
The world should see something different in us, in all our affairs and dealings with outsiders. We all have learnt something of Christ from the Spirit of God unless you don't have the Spirit, See 1 Corinthians 13: 5,NIV, "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is (developing) in you, unless, of course, you fail the test." Paul in Colossians 4: 5, " puts it this way concerning being lights to the world, "Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders, make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt (purposefulness to bear fruit) so that you may know how to answer everyone." (Emphasis Mine
Paul was purposeful, and brings that out in Romans 1: 11 - 15,NIV, "I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to make you strong, that is , that you and I may be mutually encouraged by each other's faith. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I planned many times to come to you (but have been prevented from doing so until now) in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles. I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. That is why I am so eager to preach the gospel also to you who are at Rome." Paul stated he was coming purposely to bear fruit, then he stated that he was obligated to the Greeks and non-Greeks, wise and foolish to what? To bear fruit among them , in his relationships with them. Are we being wise toward outsiders in our dealing with them. Matthew 10:16 said it would not be a bed of roses, "I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore, be as shrewd as snakes (purposeful) and as innocent doves."
In conclusion, Jesus said in Matthew 9: 37 - 38, "Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest truly is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field." If you are not purposely trying to be an example of Christ in this world you are scattering and not gathering, (See Matthew 12: 30) People will follow someone with a purpose they are willing to sacrifice for, are you willing to be a debtor to all men to be an example of the light of Jesus Christ, then you will gather a harvest and each will be rewarded according to his labor.

Having Purpose

“You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.” 2 Tim 2: 1 – 4, NKJV.
We will never be stable if we are not strong in God’s grace. Paul started this letter to Timothy with this same exhortation in the first chapter, just with different verbiage.
“Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose, and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before time began.” See 2 Timothy 1: 6 -9, NKJV.
The ninth verse reveals something that is overlooked sometimes that is important. We have heard this scripture quoted a lot, but normally verse nine is not quoted with it. It brings out that God gave us grace and a purpose before time began. The rest of this portion of scripture is telling us after we get saved to stir ourselves up to seek God and fulfill that purpose. We are to take courage and accept the fact that we have purpose in Christ and God is working that purpose out as we give ourselves to him. Let look at another scripture.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” Romans 8: 28 – 29.
If I am called according to his purpose, how do I fit in. This question is answered in 1 Corinthians 7: 20 & 24.
“Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called.” And verse 24, “Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called.”
Stir yourself up to live for God where you are at and at what stage in life you are in and God will be with you. As you do and be content as Paul said in Philippians 4: 11 – 13, waiting on God to enlarge your pasture you will grow in the grace and knowledge of God and be fruitful.

Understanding The Times

“Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Let not the mighty man glory in his might, Nor let the rich man glory in his riches: But let him who glories glory in this, That he understands and knows Me, That I am the Lord, exercising lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness in the earth. For in these I delight,: says the Lord.” Jeremiah 9: 23 – 24, NKJV.
Those that understand that God is working in the affairs of men, God gives permission to glory and declare his works to the children of men. These are strange times to some, but to those who understand that God is always striving to get men to turn from their sins and rebellion, it makes perfect sense. When we see the flagrancy of the sins of America in the making of decrees that kill innocent babies in the womb and the arrogance of the homosexual community against the purpose God created man for we can understand the tragedies that have befallen our country in the last twenty years and more.
God said in Malachi 2, “And this is the second thing you do; You cover the altar of the Lord with tears, With weeping and crying; So He does not regard the offering anymore, Nor receive it with goodwill from your hands. Yet you say, “For what reason?” Because you and the wife of your youth. With whom you have dealt; Yet she is the companion And your wife by covenant. But did He not make them one, Having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore take heed to your spirit, And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his you. For the Lord God of Israel says That He hates divorce, For it cover one’s garment with violence. Therefore take heed to your spirit , That you do not deal treacherously.” Malachi 2: 13 – 16, NKJV.
Two things that I want to point here is first, that God instituted marriage between a man and a woman to get a godly offspring. Second, a homosexual or lesbian cannot reproduce. Everything in nature reproduces which should preach to us that the homosexual life style is against nature and an abomination to God. Abomination means disgusting. To those citizens that want to live a life that is quiet and godly this evil has crept into this society because they are quiet and godly. Jeremiah says however that God is displeased when we are not valiant for the Truth on the earth, see Jeremiah 9: 3. The reason for this is explained in Jeremiah also.
“O Lord, are not Your eyes on the truth? You have stricken them, But they have not grieved; You have consumed them, But they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; They have refused to return. Therefore I said, “Surely these are poor; They are foolish; For they do not know the way of the Lord, The judgment of their God. I will go to the great men and speak to them, For they have known the way of the Lord, The judgment of their God.” But these have altogether broken the yoke And burst the bonds.” Jeremiah 5: 3 – 5, NKJV.
Jeremiah said of his time, “For the shepherds have become dull-hearted, And have not sought the Lord; Therefore they shall not prosper, and their flocks shall be scattered.” Jeremiah 10: 21.
The preachers of today that preach that nothing is going to happen that God’s is not angry with sin, just keep a positive outlook on things and you will be OK, had better be careful because God has called his people to discernment in 1 John 4: 1 and 1 Timothy 4: 1 – 8, Romans 16: 19, Romans 12: 9. If you love the sinner tell them the truth, Jesus did and didn’t make no bones about it. The dull hearted will sugar coat and say it’s not for me to condemn, but if they are called of God it is for them to call sin, sin and be valiant for the truth.
Jeremiah said, “Even the stork in the heavens Knows her appointed times; And the turtledove, the swift, and the swallow Observe the time of their coming. But my people do not know the judgment of the Lord. How can you say, ‘We are wise, And the law of the Lord is with us’? Look, the false pen of the scribe certainly works falsehood. The wise men are ashamed, They are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the Lord; So what wisdom do they have.” Jeremiah 8: 7 – 9, NKJV.
What time is it? It time to awaken out of our slumber and dull heartedness and seek the Lord. It is time to invoke the promises of God to forgive our individual sins and that of our nation and lay hold of the promise in 2 Chronicles 7: 14:
“If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7: 14, NKJV.
Prayer, repentance, a return to the foundations of “One Nation Under God” is the only way these tragedies in this Nation can be stopped. I believe, we need to lay hold of the throne of God to pray the promise that God would restore good leadership as in Jeremiah 3: 15:
“And I will give you shepherds (leadership) according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge and understanding.” Jeremiah 3: 15, NKJV.
My prayer is that God will put our nation on the hearts of everyone that understands and those who don’t understand that He will open your eyes to the operations of God. See Isaiah 5: 12 – 13.
“Their harp and the strings, The tambourine and flute, And wine are in their feasts; But they do not regard the work of the Lord, Nor consider the operation of His hands. Therefore my people have gone into captivity, Because they no knowledge; Their honorable men are famished, And the multitude dried up with thirst.” Isaiah 5: 12 – 13, NKJV.
